What is WOW?

Wired on Wheels (WOW!) is a not-for-profit Internet organization committed to making it easier for people with disabilities to decide about the places we'll visit.

WOW! offers people who are disabled — and their friends and family — an online community where they can rate accessibility, find out what other reviewers think about a destination, and make informed decisions about where to go.

Anyone who is disabled -- or a friend or family member of someone who is -- knows how wonderful, easy and normal going out becomes when a destination is accessible to us.

We also know what a limiting and frustrating experience it is when a destination is not accessible to us. We know the humiliation of entering a restaurant past the dumpsters and through the kitchen because front entrances are inaccessible. We know the embarrassment of having table after table stand-up and move their chairs around so our wheelchair can get by. We know the discomfort of having to ask a waitress to read the menu to us because no Large Font or Braille Menus are available. We know the disappointment of not being able to attend a theater performance or movie with friends because no captioning, audio devices, or accessible seating is available.

The goal of WOW! is simple: We want to use the power of the Internet to gather -- in one place -- opinions about the best places to go whether you use a wheelchair, walker, cane, or hearing device; whether you are mobility impaired, visually impaired, or hearing impaired.

WOW! is dedicated to distributing these community-created Accessibilility Reviews to other web sites, to magazines, to books so that Accessibility Ratings and Reviews become commonly available information.

For starters, Accessibility Reviews will be available on each of the 22,000 -- and very soon 300,000 --- restaurant reviews in the America Online's Digital City Dining Guide.
(Go to www.DigitalCity.com or AOL Keyword: Digital City.)

We’ll be building our Accessibility Database by collecting the reviews and ratings from a national network of reviewers - YOU. Your opinions will shape our site and give people with disabilities a fast, easy way to find the most accessible places available.

So, the next time you're out dining or simply out on the town, note your local establishments' accessibility. Our Restaurant Review Tips will give you some guidelines on what to look for. You can even print out our Restaurant Review Form and take it with you. Then, come here to our site and rate the establishment from "No Access" to "WOW!" It's that simple.
